Aachen, Hühnermarkt

The Hühnermarkt ("chicken market") is situated downhill from the main market. The "Chicken Thief" is one of many figurative fountains in Aachen. House number 17 has a changeful history. In the 17th century, it was built as a pharmacy by Adam Coebergh. In 1783, it was turned over to Andreas Monheim, who had it remodeled by Jakob Couven three years later. Today the Couven museum exhibits furniture from the 17th, 18th and 19th century and provides a glimpse of the way of live in past times. The Rokoko town house is the birth place of Leonard Monheim, founder of Leonard Monheim AG. In 1857 he started manufacturing chocolate here, for which the trademark "Trumpf Schokolade" was created in 1910.
