Cologne, Aachener Weiher

Downtown Cologne is almost completely encircled by a park belt which is in the place of the former inner city fortification. It is seven kilometers long and on average 200 meters wide. The strictly geometrical artificial pond is called "Aachener Weiher". Due to the proximity of the university, the adjacent lawns are especially popular with students. There's also the "Beer Garden at the Aachener Weiher." Since 2004, the part of the park belt between Aachener Street and Bachemer Street is called Hiroshima Nagasaki Park. The name goes back to an initiative by the Cologne Peace Forum.
