The theater at the Gustaf-Gründgens-Square was built to the plans of architect Bernhard Pfau and completed in 1970. There are two separate "houses" behind the rolling facade: The Big House has about 900 seats and the Small House can be configured for 200-300 seats.
The architectural contrast to the Thyssen building next to it is considerable. The 95m tall office high rise was completed in 1960 and is also known as "Dreischeibenhaus" (Three Slices House), because it is shaped like a flat building sandwiched between two smaller "slices". The center slice is three floors taller than the sides.
