Jüchen, View over Surface Mine Garzweiler

To the west of Grevenbroich lies the brown coal surface mine Garzweiler. It was named after the town Garzweiler, which was located at the center of the mining area. On the northern edge of the pit, a vantage point has been set up. From here one has a view over the heaps of gobbing which the excavation of Garzweiler 1 has left. The mining is moving westward and has crossed the Autobahn 44 between the A46 and Jackerath, which was the boundary to the mining area Garzweiler 2. Towards southeast one can see the RWE power plants Grevenbroich-Frimmersdorf and -Neurath, which use most of the coal from Garzweiler I and II.
