Mönchengladbach, Castle Rheydt after Sunset

Castle Rheydt is the only completely preserved Renaissance complex in the Niederrhein area. It has roots in the 12th century, but its current form was predominantly created under Otto von Bylandt in the 16th century. The moat around the entire complex of gatebuilding, first fortification and main building is fed by the nearby Niers river. A second inner moat surrounds the manor-house. The castle is municipal property. It is used as a history museum. On one side of the courtyard between gate and fortification the restaurant ViTA offers Italian food.
